Meizu Pro 7 : a phone with 2 displays

Meizu, a Chinese brand recently have been producing some great looking devices as well as perform adequately well. On the basis of some recent leaks and strong rumors, the successor to the Meizu Pro 6, i.e the Pro 7 (and even the Pro 7 plus) has been into development with a distinct feature of having a secondary display to the back.
Meizu probably is not the first company to incorporate it but rather many flip phones in the past and in terms of smartphones, Yotaphone has made use of 2 displays.

The Yotaphone 2 was the last device to have front and back displays with paperback type i.e E-ink rear display. One could configure it to act like an always-ON display.

Previously rumors mounted to paperback type rear display but now, some renders point to a regular colour display or even E-ink and a colour display. The display size is hinted to be around 2 inches diagonal which will be able to reflect everything on the main display as well as can assist in taking selfies with the rear camera.

On the specs point of view the Meizu Pro 7 may come with:
  • 5.2 inch 1080p display (1080 × 1920)
  • Mediatek Helio X30 SOC based on 10nm process. It comes with 2 Cortex A73 cores clocked at 2.5gHz , 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.2gHz and remaining 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.9gHz.
  • 4/6/8 GB RAM with 64/128GB storage
  • 12MP dual rear cameras with Sony IMX386 and IMX286 sensor
  • 16MP front facing camera
  • USB type-C, 3.5mm audio Jack

The larger variant i.e the Pro 7 plus may come with a 5.7 inch 4K super AMOLED display.

No other details have been surfaced apart from the SOC, camera and design. The images are developed from CAD and resemble closely to the actual device from previous renders. How the device looks and it's ergonomics while using it all depends on personal choice. How practical will be the secondary display, all depends on Meizu as to whether what features they implement and it's usefulness should be the selling point.

Speaking of the predecessor i.e Meizu Pro 6, it came with a 5.2 inch 1080p display and was powered by Mediatek Helio X25 SOC with 4GB RAM. The battery capacity was 2560mAh, therefore to power 2 displays the Pro 7 must be equipped with more capacity. Also, Mediatek SOC's are not battery efficient hence, higher capacity is anticipated.

The Pro 7 along with Pro 7 plus can be unveiled very soon as its been more than a year since the Pro 6 was launched. The expected pricing could range from $410- 560 depending on the configuration of RAM and storage.
Do let us know about your thoughts on the Pro 7 and its secondary display. If given a choice, would you prefer the LG V series type secondary display or an E-ink rear mounted display. We are willing to know!!
