Oppo R11 vs OnePlus 5 |
Oppo is a brand which we have not been much interested in as the only thing that they focus on is selfies and their devices are powered by mediocre SOC's, still selling for much higher price point. However, the reason that we are writing this post and comparing Oppo's R11 with OnePlus 5, is because of the close resemblance. Infact, the OnePlus 5 looks more similar to the R11 rather than the iPhone 7 plus.
One interesting fact is that, Oppo and OnePlus are related to each other as Oppo is the parent company of OnePlus. This indicates that they share a lot of things in common. For.eg. the VOOC charging technology of Oppo is disguised as Dash charging by OnePlus.
Keeping the history and facts aside and not wasting much time lets compare both the latest offerings from Oppo and OnePlus.
The front and back of both are pretty identical. If branding is removed, then its extremely difficult to point out which is R11 and OP5. The dual cameras at the back, the placement of LED flash, the arrangement of the bands remain almost identical. One noticeable difference lies in the microphone which lies next to the dual cameras on the OP5 and at the top in R11.
The power button is located to the right and the volume buttons are to the left on the R11. The R11 also has a width of just 6.8mm.
OnePlus 5 |
The front of OnePlus 5 resembles like most of the oppo devices as the R11 itself looks like any other previously released Oppo device. The front of the R11 consists of 20MP camera, sensors , earpiece, 5.5 inch 1080p AMOLED screen and the fingerprint sensor at the bottom housed in the capacitive home button which provides decent haptic.
The OnePlus 5 on the other hand also has a 5.5 inch 1080p AMOLED display, 16MP front camera, sensors, earpiece and the fingerprint sensor at the bottom similar to the R11.
The left of the device consists of the volume rockers and an additional button which can be triggered to silent the phone or any other task can be added to be performed.
The right side consists of the power button along with SIM card tray which takes in 2 nano sims. The device has a thickness of 7.25mm.
The next point of comparison is camera:
The OnePlus 5 and R11 both contain dual camera sensors with one of the sensor providing 2X optical zoom.
The OnePlus 5 consists of 16MP Sony IMX398 sensor with f/1.7 aperture and 1.12 micron pixel size. It also has EIS.
The optical zoom lens consists of 20MP Sony IMX 350, f/2.6 1.0 micron lens. OnePlus 5 claimed 2.0X optical zoom however, they later clarified that its 1.6X optical zoom and the rest is taken care by the megapixel count.
The front facing camera is of 16MP with f/2.0 aperture lens and Sony IMX371 sensor. It has 1.0 micron pixel size and also has EIS.
The rear camera is capable of 4K video recording at 30FPS, 1080p at 30/60 FPS and 720 at 30FPS however, EIS is not enabled during 4K recording. The slow motion video recording takes place at 720p with 120FPS.
The front camera can record 1080p and 720p at 30FPS.
The portrait mode is available only via rear camera and the front camera is devoid of it. The other features of rear camera includes Portrait, Pro Mode, Panorama, HDR, HQ, Dynamic Denoise, Clear Image and RAW Image.
Camera interface on the R11 |
The Oppo R11's rear camera is similar to the OnePlus 5 with 16MP + 20MP dual rear cameras. The 16MP rear camera has f/1.7 aperture lens with 1.12 micron pixel size and the 20MP rear telephoto lens comes with f/2.6 lens and dual LED flash.
The front facing camera is different from the OnePlus 5 as it comes with 20MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The rear camera is capable of 4K video recording at 30FPS.
The camera performance is expected to be similar on both devices as the optics remain same with only difference in the front camera. As Oppo is known for selfies, the front camera on the R11 theoretically has to be better than the OnePlus 5. It also comes with various beautification modes even while recording from the front facing camera therby making vlogs slightly better or may be more unrealistic :-P
Internals:
The OnePlus 5 comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SOC based on 8 KRYO 280 cores (4+4) clocked at 2.45gHz and 1.9gHz. It comes with Adreno 540GPU with 657 GFlops. There are 2 RAM and storage variant options: 1. 6GB RAM - 64GB storage
2. 8GB RAM - 128GB storage
The Oppo R11 on the other hand comes with Snapdragon 660 SOC ( one of the first devices to equip the 660). The Snapdragon 660 is based on KRYO 260 architecture with 8 (4+4 config) cores clocked at 2.2gHz and 1.8gHz and has Adreno 512GPU with 255 GFlops. The R11 comes in one RAM and storage option i.e 4GB - 64GB however, the storage can be expanded upto 256GB via sdcard unlike OP5 where you are restricted to expand memory.
Speaking in general with regards to performance, both the devices can easily provide great day to day usage and can easily handle heavier tasks. The Snapdragon 835 along with 6/8GB RAM in OnePlus 5 is a powerhouse to handle multiple tasks especially when concerned with gaming. The 1080p display will not add any unnecessary demand on the GPU to push the graphics therby not allowing for temperatures to rise. The 10nm process with 835 should also suffice for better battery life.
The Snapdragon 660 with R11 is a newer SOC and is based on 14nm process. The battery efficiency is expected to be better with this SOC and performance wise, although not as powerful as in the OP5, yet capable enough to deliver for higher and demanding graphics. The predecessor to 660 i.e 653 was a very powerful midranger and performed very well in gaming in most devices, hence more better performance is expected.
Software:
Both the devices come with Android Nougat out of the box. The OnePlus 5 comes with Oxygen OS which is a skin very close to stock Android with minor tweaks. On the other hand, the Oppo R11 comes with Color OS 3.1 (based on 7.1 nougat )which is a heavily customised skin. It has no app drawer like most other Chinese skins and bloat is present to some extent.

Battery:
With 3300mAh battery, the OnePlus 5 has slightly more capacity than the R11 which has 3000mAh. However, the R11 is more thinner therby smaller battery capacity seems legit.
The OnePlus 5 comes with Dash fast charging which has ratings of 5V at 4A i.e 20W power.
The R11 on the other hand comes with Oppo's own VOOC charging technology which also has similar ratings. (Probably VOOC and dash charging is same only with different name).
Miscellaneous specs:
The OnePlus 5 comes with Bluetooth 5 which is only among few flagships like Samsung S8 and S8 plus to be equipped with. It supports dual WiFi bands i.e 2.4ghz and 5gHz along with 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, NFC and USB type-C port.
It also has support for 34 LTE bands therby supporting most of the global bands.
Sensors: Fingerprint, Hall, Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Proximity, RGB Ambient Light Sensor, Electronic Compass.
The OnePlus 5 is available in slate gray and midnight black colour options.
Sensors: accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, proximity.
The R11 is available in Gold, rose Gold and matte black colour options.
Final thoughts:
Both the OnePlus 5 and Oppo R11 although identical in form factor and design yet they offer completely different specs in terms of performance. The camera remains the same with only change in the front facing camera. The quality cannot be judged as we do not provide recommendations on the basis of mere specs. This post has been written to provide differences in terms of theoretical specs and overall features and functionality of the device. The real world usage is what matters in the end.
The OnePlus 5 is a clear winner based on the SOC used and the amount of RAM that OnePlus has included. The 6GB and 64GB variant sells for about $450 and the Oppo R11 4GB-64GB variant is priced at $500 (bases on Chinese pricing converted to USD). This indicates that Oppo wants to sell the R11 for a slightly premium price tag whereas OnePlus 5 is aiming to be an affordable flagship.
Do let us know about your thoughts on the OnePlus 5 and the Oppo R11. The R11 sale will begin June 30th in China whereas the OnePlus 5 is already on sale.
