Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 450 SOC

The 400 series from Qualcomm has been improving in terms of efficiency as well as in delivering performance over the years. The sd430/435 were widely used by many OEM's for budget oriented devices especially Xiaomi, Lenovo, Moto, etc. The devices with sd430/435 have been doing good and their battery efficiency is at par with most other SOC's. Now, Qualcomm has added another SOC under the 400 series therby providing a successor to the popular 430/435 i.e sd450.
The Snapdragon 450 is the first SOC in this series to be based on 14nm process.

Qualcomm Snapdragon

The Snapdragon 450 comes with 8 Cortex A53 cores similar to the Snapdragon 430/435. The GPU coupled with 450 is the adreno 506 which was present on the Snapdragon 625 SOC. This SOC is known for delivering great performance along with having the best battery efficiency. The GPU is also quite powerful with 130 GFlops and 650 MHz.

The main highlight of the Snapdragon 450 is in terms of camera and network support.
It comes with support for 21MP camera or 13+13MP dual sensors, 1080p video recording at 30FPS with 60FPS playback, hybrid Autofocus and an additional feature of live bokeh effect. This real time or live bokeh effect allows capturing for more depth of field during macro shots therby keeping the focussed part as the main center of attraction.
This SOC supports 1080p resolution and Qualcomm Hexagon DSP for better multimedia, camera and sensor processing therby consuming lesser power.

In terms of connectivity, it comes with snapdragon X9 LTE modem , 2X20 MHz carrier aggregation and capable of peak uplink speeds of 150Mbps and 300Mbps peak downlink speeds. It comes with regular WiFi bands and MU-MIMO. USB 3.0 and quick charge 3.0 is also present with the 450.

With better camera support, better network connectivity, better GPU and processing factors, the sd450 is aimed at delivering power and efficiency to budget oriented devices which were somewhat devoid of mainly in terms of "power" few years ago. Although the camera supports just 1080p video recording (as the sd625/626 supports 4K), its indeed a budget oriented SOC. The SOC will be seen very soon in devices by the end of 2017.
This SOC will surely be a turning point in the budget category as the other offerings (like Mediatek's P series) are below par. With sd450, SOC competition will increase therby leading to better "processing" in the budget segment devices.
