HTC was initially the leading contender in the smartphone world. They were the ones to make use of Android OS in the phones at the time when Android was not a major OS. However now because of their marketing strategy and high pricing, Chinese manufacturers, etc. they have been cold in the smartphone lineup.
Here, I got an HTC desire 728 ultra edition which was launched almost a year back. I know it's quite old but better late than never. There are many versions of it depending on regions and hence specifications may vary. This is the 3GB RAM and 32GB version.
Box contents and overview:
The box packaging of most HTC devices are the same. They have great packaging for all the devices and so is the same with this. Removing the slide part , we get to the main part i.e the box.
Getting rid of the upper part of the box , we get to the device itself. The device has a polycarbonate body with a non-removable back panel. Although it has a polycarbonate body yet it feels premium for the price point of about 250$.
The side panels are made of plastic with chamfered edges. The volume buttons and the power ON/OFF button lie to the right.
The left side is equipped with the slot for 2 nano-sims and additional slot for micro-SD upto 200GB.
The slot covering for the sims and sd card seems fragile and hence one must use it with care. However, when clipped to the slot it doesn't matter.
The box contents apart from the Device consists of a wall adapter having an output of 5V at 1 A to charge its 2800mah battery, a decent pair of earphones (not the in ear style) and the micro USB cable (no USB- type C in this case).
The other contents include quick start guide along with warranty information and some stickers containing code in order to claim the warranty.
The SAR value is 0.543 W/kg for head and 0.371 W/kg for body which seems much lesser than the maximum value which is to be followed by the OEMs.
Device overview:
The front panel consists of 2 boom sound front firing speakers and on first impression itself i was amazed at its sound balance. It also consists of Dolby Atmos which further enhances the sound levels.
The device has a 5.5 inch HD display. The top part consists of the 5MP camera and the sensors and an LED for notifications.
The desire 728 has no physical home button but rather on-screen buttons. The major let down is the absence of fingerprint sensor.
The back portion consists of the 13MP rear camera with a single LED flash. The back part is prone to smudges like most other smartphones.
The device is powered with the Mediatek MT6753 processor with 8 cores clocked at 1.5 Ghz and 3 GB RAM. It has 32 GB onboard storage of which about 23 GB is available for user. The gpu is mali T720.
The device runs on Android 5.1 out of the box which is quite old as Android 7.1.1 is already available for some devices. It has HTC's own sense UI 7.0
The HTC desire 728 has most of the sensors which is required for any device in its price range. Here, HTC moves forward when compared to Samsung as they seemed generous here in terms of sensors.
In terms of bloatware, HTC is known for adding some bloat of pre-installed apps like Facebook which cannot be uninstalled. These apps can only be disabled. With the HTC sense UI, you also get the blinkfeed which is a dedicated homescreen for all your social media and other content which shows them in the tile format.
This was just an overview of the device and some initial thoughts and impressions. This was our first unboxing and we will be back soon with the review of it. Do share your thoughts about our article and share it.
Thanks for reading and have a great day.
