Samsung Galaxy S9 - all rumors at one place

Samsung Galaxy S9 render

The year 2017 is almost at the point to bid adieu and we in the tech world are already excited to see what the year 2018 has to offer. With CES and MWC kicking off in the first quarter of 2018 we are expecting an array of interesting products that would be unveiled. One of the most anticipated device that keeps everyone at their toes during Q1 of every year is the Samsung Galaxy S series and this time it is the S9. Like the S8, the S9 too will have an elder sibling i.e the S9 Plus. There are quite a few rumors surrounding these devices and here we have compiled a toned down version of it to make it easier for our readers to refer.

The Galaxy S9 is expected to boast a 5.65 inch display (super AMOLED with 18.5:9 aspect ratio) and the S9 Plus is expected to have a larger 6 or 6.2 inch display. The front bezels are expected to be smaller than the S8 and the top will house various sensors along with the front facing camera and the iris scanner. The S9 and the Plus may have a 3MP camera for iris scanner which is a minor upgrade from the S8 and Plus since they came with a lesser 2MP resolution. This will enable slightly better recognition in low light and various other situations. However, the fingerprint sensor has not been omitted (#iPhone X) and from the renders it can be seen that it will be located below the camera module as against at the side as in the Note 8 and the S8.Initially there were hints to have the fingerprint sensor embedded within the display which unfortunately will not be the case now if we trust the renders.

Samsung S8/Plus to the left and S9 Plus to the right

One of the most strongest claims are that the S9 will come with a single camera lens and the S9 Plus will boast dual lens. The resolution and specs cannot be confirmed as of now (although 12MP seems like a sweet spot for them lately) however Samsung had recently announced the W2018 which came with a large f/1.5 aperture lens (prior to that the LG V30 came with the largest aperture i.e f/1.6). There are possibilities that the S9 and the Plus may also have a larger aperture considering the S series being their flagship, must come with a flagship offering.
Few days ago Samsung introduced the A8 and A8 Plus 2018 with dual front facing cameras which is their first device with dual front facing sensors. It indicates that they should be making use of dual sensors even for their flagship however if we compare the front panels of the S8 and the expected S9, they are identical in all respects which further indicates that the S9 and Plus will have a single front facing camera. (Probably Samsung might come with something revolutionary in it like the Animoji, we do not know)

Speaking of what will power these flagships, the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 will be powering the units in the USA (which is the case every year) whereas most other regions will have Exynos 9810 powered units. The 845 is based on KRYO 385 architecture with 4 Cortex A75 cores clocked at 2.8gHz and 4 Cortex A55 cores clocked at 1.8 gHz. Both the Exynos and Snapdragon 845 SOC's are based on 10nm process which will pave way for better efficiency. Samsung recently started manufacturing 512GB of flash storage which might be included with their upcoming flagship although the base variants could have 64 or 128GB storage with either 4 or 6GB RAM. Coming to how much juice will they offer or precisely the battery capacity, the S9 is rumored to come with a 3200 mAh capacity whereas the S8 came with 3000mAh capacity. There is no word on regarding the capacity of the S9 Plus yet, however while looking at the bumped up capacity on the S9, it seems likely that the capacity will be higher than the S8 Plus which was 3500 mAh. Both these devices will support Quick charge 3.0 or 4.0 and the devices will be based on Android Oreo with Samsung's own Ui.

Now coming to the unveiling, Samsung has been launching their first half flagships during the MWC with the exception of S8 and S8 Plus which were announced almost a month after the MWC in 2017. This time however, the rumors suggest the unveiling during the MWC in February although the exact date is still debatable. The availability of these devices can be expected by April 2018.

The leaks and renders seem quite strong and promising. One thing evident is that there will not be any considerable design changes if you were hoping for. Hence, we would like to know about your thoughts regarding these devices and were you planning to upgrade to the S9 or rather settle with the existing device? Do let us know in the comments below.
