Blue light filter - what role do they play ?

We spend more time with our phones and PC's or Laptops than with our acquaintances. The constant exposure to screen and the light it radiates does add up to the stress on our eyes and overall lead us in a weary state by the end of the day. The same story repeats the next day and we hardly pay attention to our own well being because its a busy world and getting away from gadgets is almost impossible!

Its a fact that we cannot completely cut off its use or even cut down short however we can prevent its adverse effects in the long run and hence Blue Light filter is one such remedy.

First of all let's understand the theory behind it. The visible light is made of different colors taking 'White' light as a reference and the 7 colors of a rainbow when combined together form White light. Now, what we are interested in is the blue light. The Blue light has lesser wavelength (I know it's physics but bear with us) and more energy. The Red light has more wavelength and lesser energy (one of the reasons for Red to be used as a danger sign since it can be seen more clearly from a distance).

During the day, the Sun emits the natural light which does contain UV rays and also the blue light. This blue light is required for us to keep our energy levels higher which is beneficial for us. This may sound interesting and may contradict our thoughts about blue light hence, why do we need a filter ?
Well, our body is made to be active during the day time and crave for rest as the day progresses. This Blue light can hamper our sleep which will ultimately affect our body and in the long run may put us in a situation where we may need sleeping pils! Of course it's not a pleasant way to get sleep, is it?

Hence, in order to restrict the adverse effects Blue Light Filter becomes beneficial. This filter will eliminate the blue light from the screen. Be it AMOLED displays or IPS LCD, the multiple colors are always formed from the primary colors i.e RGB (RED, GREEN, BLUE)
If we use the color palette, the combination of Red and Green will form Yellow and the combination of Red, Green and Blue will form White (considering values upto 255). Hence, if we eliminate Blue, the different colors available are - Red, Yellow and Green. Out of these usually Yellow is preferred although some apps may allow for more customizations and you can choose the settings as per your taste.

Usually many manufacturers include the Blue Light filter in their Ui and sometimes even call it as the Night Light. However, even if your device is devoid of it don't worry, there are many apps on the Play Store to suffice your needs.
Some of the apps that you can try out are:
(There are many other apps from which you can choose and not just the above mentioned since all of them fulfill the basic requirement of eliminating the Blue light)

The best application of using the Night Light or Blue Light Filter is while reading or just surfing the web. Usually the avid readers who spend hours reading may require the filter. Speaking of personal experience, the Yellow light does reduce the strain and keeps the eye cool hence, the filters are indeed effective and a must in your device.
