Huawei Honor 7X - an ideal mid-ranger?

Huawei had recently unveiled the Honor 7X in China. The 7X was one of the most anticipated device considering the success of the predecessor i.e the 6X. The 6X did really well in the mid-range or budget segment, having one of the best cameras for the category and the performance was also on par. However, recently Huawei announced the 9i in India which is the renamed Miamang 6 ( China) or Mate 10 lite as known globally. The 9i is priced at 17999 and shares most of its specs with the 7X. Although do remember that the 7X will be available for sale in December.

Huawei has followed with the recent trend of having 18:9 aspect ratio displays with the Mate 10,  9i and now with the 7X. From the front it resembles the 9i to a greater extent however it misses out on the dual front facing cameras.
The device has a metal unibody design with the fingerprint sensor located to the back. The fingerprint sensor detects the fingerprints quite fast and is highly reliable. The dual cameras along with the LED flash are aligned horizontally as against vertical on the 9i. The top and bottom bezels are minimal and the new aspect ratio makes it taller. The device has a thickness of 7.6mm and weighs 165g. The device does come with a 3.5mm headphone jack and with the recent trend to eliminate it from many devices, it has to be mentioned. The charging port and data transfer port is a micro USB port and not type-C like the Flipkart's Billion Capture+.

On the camera front, it comes with 2 lenses. One of the lens is a regular, 16MP and the other is a 2MP depth sensor. The 9i also comes with similar rear camera specs. Compared to the Honor 6X that was launched a year ago, the resolution of the main sensor has been bumped up from 12MP.
The front facing camera is of 8MP as against 5MP on the 6X. The camera quality can be judged only on practical usage although, the 9i performed quite well in the camera department hence, the same quality and performance is expected with the 7X too. Also there are a variety of modes available with the camera including a Pro mode and portrait mode considering the availability of the secondary rear camera.

The 7X is powered by Huawei's own HiSilicon Kirin 659 SOC. This SOC comes with 8 Cortex A53 cores with 4 cores clocked at 2.36gHz and the remaining cores are clocked at 1.7gHz. This SOC is similar to the Kirin 655 with slightly higher clock speed and is based on the 16nm process. The GPU used is Mali T830 MP2. This SOC is capable of delivering decent performance with day to day usage and can handle multitasking with ease. This SOC falls slightly short of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 in terms of efficiency and performance.
The Honor 7X comes with EMUi 5.1 based Android Nougat out of the box and the Oreo update has been promised. This Ui is heavily customized and well optimised too although it has no resemblance to stock Android like the MiUi. The absence of stock Android could mean slower Security Patch updates and major OS update.

The Honor 7X will be available in Black, Blue and Gold colors. It will be available by December and Huawei has claimed that they would be pricing it competitively which indicates that it will be priced closely to the Redmi Note 5 (or even the Note 4). We can expect the pricing to start from under Rs. 15000 with the 128 GB variant priced near to the 9i around Rs. 18000.
