In the past few days Xiaomi has been teasing a smartphone in India dubbed as "Desh ka Smartphone" which indicated another budget offering after the launch of Redmi Y1 and Y1 lite. The device turned out to be the Redmi 5A which has been officially announced. The Redmi 5A is set to replace the Redmi 4A that was launched earlier in 2017 itself. Both the 5A and 4A are quite similar however the more interesting part is the pricing and its offering.

It comes with a polycarbonate body and metal like finish however it is deprived of the fingerprint sensor like in the Redmi 4A. The Infrared sensor is present at the top of the device which can be used as a remote for the TV or AC, if those models are supported. The bottom of the device consists of the touch type capacitive buttons which aren't backlit like most of their budget devices. However the main advantage that the Redmi 5A has over some other devices is that it comes with a dedicated sdcard slot for expanding memory (upto 128GB) along with dedicated dual Nano SIM slots.
Redmi 5A will be available in Gold, Grey and Rose Gold colors |
The SOC used is the same as that on the 4A which is the mediocre Snapdragon 425. It can handle basic tasks and casual gaming quite well and the performance is usually better than Mediatek's offering. The battery capacity also remains the same as that on the 4A i.e 3000mAh as well as the camera.
On the software front, it comes with Android Nougat based on MIUI 9 and comes with all the features like dual apps, multi-window, etc. that the MIUI 9 packs.
The Redmi 5A is a budget oriented device which mainly focusses on the basic needs of the Indian audience and also keeps affordability as its main driving factor. It is available in 2 variants i.e 2GB RAM and 16GB storage and the other variant comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage.
The 2-16GB Redmi 5A will be available for Rs. 4999 for the first 5 million units after which it will be available for Rs. 5999 whereas the 3-32GB variant will retail for Rs. 6999. The device will be available via Flipkart and mi.com with the first sale on 7th December at 12 noon and it will be available in Gold, Grey and Rose Gold colors.
