Reliance announces Jio VoLTE feature phone with effective cost of Rs.0

Reliance industries held their 40th AGM in which the chairman Mukesh Ambani announced that Jio has crossed 125 million customers and also announced a new made in India feature phone that supports VoLTE. Along with the phone, they also announced some additional schemes related to the phone. The most interesting factor is that the phone has no cost however, if you buy it you will have to only pay a security deposit of Rs. 1500 in addition to any scheme that you prefer.

This Rs. 1500 as security deposit is taken so as to prevent any misuse and the amount will be refundable after 3 years on returning the device.

Jio feature phone

The device being a feature phone comes with 2.4 inch QVGA display, alphanumeric keypad, 3.5mm headphone jack, torch light, microphone and speaker, rear camera, micro SD card slot, FM radio and rest of the basic features available in any other feature phone. The feature that makes it stand out from others is NFC support for digital payments and VoLTE. Another addition is Voice commands by which you can with speech make calls, browse internet, open any app and so on. It comes preloaded with Jio music, Jio Cinema and Jio TV.

Speaking of the plans along with the phone, Jio announced Rs. 153 per month plan which includes free voice calls and SMS along with unlimited data and Jio apps. There are chances of the data speed to be max upto 500MB or even 1GB as in the regular Jio membership plan. However, its not yet been confirmed. There are additional mini packs consisting of Rs. 54 weekly and Rs. 24 for 2 days.
As it supports Jio apps, you can watch movie and TV via them and if you want to watch them on Television then Jio has another plan of Rs. 309 per month dubbed as Jio Phone-TV Cable plan. This plan can be used with any TV including non-smart TV.


The device will be available for Beta testing from August 15th and prebooking starts from August 24th. The device will be available to users from September. The device can be prebooked from Reliance digital stores and from my Jio app. 

The main aim of Jio is to eliminate the limitation of using data on generic feature phones which only support 2G networks. In India many people still make use of feature phones and accordingly​, 50 crore phones are feature phones out of 78 crores. Therefore the ultimate aim of Jio to connect​India digitally can take place at a rapid pace with this Made in India feature phone.
