Mediatek SOC guide

Mediatek Logo

Mediatek SOC's have been quite notorious for poor optimization and battery drain yet not all are the same. Some of the SOC's are quite powerful and compete directly with Snapdragon's midrange SOC's. Mediatek SOC's are widely used in budget to midrange devices because of which they are worth mentioning about. Below is a list of widely used SOC's with some brief about them.

1: HELIO X30
The Helio X30 is a decacore SOC i.e it has 10 cores in clusters of 3. One cluster consists of 2 Cortex A73 cores clocked at 2.5gHz , 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.2gHz and 4 Cortex A35 cores clocked at 1.9gHz.
The X30 is based on 10nm process and has support for LPDDR4 RAM upto 8GB with 1866Mhz frequency and UFS 2.1 storage.

GPU: IMG PowerVR 7XTP- MT4, 800Mhz frequency and supports upto 4K resolution

Camera: upto dual 16MP camera support with 4K video recording at 30FPS. Here the dual camera setup can have an optical zoom lens where the functionality can be similar to the iPhone 7 plus's camera lens. The object can be zoomed 2X without loss in quality.

2: HELIO X27
The Helio X27 is a decacore SOC i.e it has 10 cores in clusters of 3. One cluster consists of 2 Cortex A72 cores clocked at 2.6gHz , 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.0gHz and 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.6gHz.
The X27 is based on 16nm process and has support for dual channel LPDDR3 RAM upto 4GB with 800Mhz frequency and eMMC5.1 storage support.

GPU: Mali T880 - MP4 with 875Mhz frequency and support upto 2560×1600 resolution.

Camera: Single lens upto 32MP with 4K recording at 24/30 FPS

The HELIO X25 is exactly similar to the X27 with difference in clock speeds of 3 clusters.
The 2 Cortex A72 cores are clocked at 2.5gHz, 4 Cortex A53 cores at 2.0gHz and remaining 4 A53 at 1.55gHz.

3: HELIO X23
The Helio X23 is a decacore SOC i.e it has 10 cores in clusters of 3. One cluster consists of 2 Cortex A72 cores clocked at 2.3gHz , 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.85gHz and 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.4gHz.
The X27 is based on 20nm process and has support for dual channel LPDDR3 RAM upto 4GB with 800Mhz frequency and eMMC5.1 storage support.

GPU: Mali T880 - MP4 with 780Mhz frequency and support upto 2560×1600 resolution.

Camera: Single lens upto 32MP with 4K recording at 24/30 FPS

4: HELIO X20
The Helio X20 is Mediatek's widely used X series SOC. This SOC has been into use in most mid-rangers and the practical record of usage has been quite decent in performance however, its not optimised for better battery life. Counterparts like Snapdragon 653/652 and even 625 have better efficiency in terms of battery life.

The Helio X20 is a decacore SOC i.e it has 10 cores in clusters of 3. One cluster consists of 2 Cortex A72 cores clocked at 2.1gHz , 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.85gHz and 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.4gHz.
The X20 is based on 20nm process and has support for dual channel LPDDR3 RAM upto 4GB with 800Mhz frequency and eMMC5.1 storage support.

GPU: Mali T880 - MP4 with 780Mhz frequency and support upto 2560×1600 resolution.

Camera: Single lens upto 32MP with 4K recording at 24/30 FPS

All the SOC's mentioned above support regular WiFi standards of 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth. The Helio x30 supports LTE CAT 10 download and CAT 13 upload whereas the rest support LTE CAT 6.

P series:

1. HELIO P25
The HELIO P25 is the newest offering from Mediatek under the P series. The P 25 is an octacore SOC based on 16nm process with 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.6gHz and remaining 4 Cortex A53 at 1.6gHz.
It supports LPDDR3 RAM upto 4GB (933Mhz) and LPDDR4 upto 6GB ( 1600Mhz frequency) and eMMC 5.1 storage.

GPU: Mali T880 - MP2 GPU clocked at 1000Mhz and 1080p display resolution support

Camera: dual 13MP or single 24MP capable of 4K video recording at 24FPS.

2. HELIO P20
The P20 is an octacore SOC based on 16nm process with 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.3gHz and remaining 4 Cortex A53 at 1.6gHz.
It supports single channel LPDDR3 RAM upto 4GB (933Mhz) and dual channel LPDDR4 upto 6GB ( 1600Mhz frequency) and eMMC 5.1 storage.

GPU: Mali T880 - MP2 GPU clocked at 900Mhz and 1080p display resolution support

Camera: 24MP capable of 4K video recording at 24FPS.

3. HELIO P10
The P10 is an octacore SOC based on 28nm process with 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.0gHz and remaining 4 Cortex A53 at 1.2gHz.
It supports single channel LPDDR3 RAM upto 4GB (933Mhz) and eMMC 5.1 storage.

GPU: Mali T860 - MP2 GPU clocked at 700Mhz and 1080p display resolution support

Camera: 21MP capable of 4K video recording at 24/30 FPS.

There is also the P15 SOC, however it just has a marginal increase in the clock speed.
Rest of the specs remain the same as that of the P10.

All the P series SOC come with support for regular WiFi standards of 802.11a/b/g/n/ac with exception of ac in P10. The LTE category is CAT 6 on all SOC's.

With the X and P series, Mediatek also has the regular MT series SOC's. However, there are variety of variations with minor changes in either clock speed or memory. Their performance level is average and not worth mentioning about.
The major brands which make use of the P and X series SOC's are Leeco, Xiaomi (China specific variants), Lenovo, HTC, UMI (makes use of rarely used X27 SOC) , etc.

(This post contains just an overview of some SOC's. The detailed description will be available via the official site showing some other features however, user required information has been made available here. )
