Zenfone AR - another TANGO phone

Last year Asus launched a variety of devices under the zenfone 3 series. This year in CES 2017 , Asus showcased two devices i.e the zenfone 3 zoom and the zenfone AR . Most interesting device is the AR where AR is the augmented reality and based on Google's project i.e the Project Tango.

But first , what is TANGO?
In simple terms Tango is a research project under Google where it emphasizes on making use of softwares and rather computer vision to make a virtual image of the surrounding. Like imagine you can make use of Tango based apps to measure the floor space of a room or virtually check out how will a particular furniture look when kept at a particular place and many more.

With various Tango based apps which are under development more use can be harnessed. However all phones cannot make use of it as it requires special sensors and lenses which sense the surroundings.
It is not like the clip art on normal phones  :-P, rather it makes precise measurements with 3D mapping and provides the output.

The most famous Pokemon GO game makes use of Augmented reality which no doubt is compatible in all phones but Tango is a step ahead.

Speaking of the asus zenfone AR, although the phone is not commercially available like the Lenovo phab 2 pro which is another phone with Tango, however the features of Tango are likely to be same.

 Specifications of Zenfone AR are:

  • 5.7 inch QHd display (2K ) Super AMOLED screen with Gorilla glass 4 protection.
  • Ram 8 GB ( high end variant )
  • Powered by Snapdragon 821 chipset with 2 cores clocked at 2.35gHz and remaining 2 cores clocked at 1.6gHz
  • GPU: adreno 530
  • Rear camera : 23 megapixels with f2.0 and OIS, EIS and capable of 4K video recording
  • Secondary camera : 8 MP with f2.0 aperture
  • Runs on Android 7.0 nougat
Another main feature apart from Tango is the day dream VR capability. This is not present on the Lenovo phab 2 pro.

As seen from the above image which is from Asus's official site about the AR , it consists of 3 camera modules each having its own task. One of them is the main camera having 23 MP. with f2.0 aperture The second and the third modules are for Tango.
The second one is for motion tracking which helps in the augmented reality and the third sensor is for depth sensing. This depth sensing helps in the virtual measurements of any particular object.

This image is an example of making use of depth sensors and augmented reality.

Indeed this device has a lot to offer and is a clear indication of more development in the field of AR and VR.
Unlike Lenovo phab 2 pro which was not a very polished product as it being first mobile device using Tango, it will be interesting to see whether how will Asus Zenfone AR will perform. The pricing has not yet been revealed but however it could be commercially available soon. Do let us know about your thoughts on this product in the comments below.
