Oppo R15 and R15 DME - The next flagship killer?

The title may ring some bells since OnePlus devices have always been the flagship killers whereas Oppo devices have always been selfie centric. This week, Oppo made the R15 and R15 DME (Dream Mirror Edition) official with a notch. Unfortunately if you do not like the notch and were planning to upgrade to the next OnePlus flagship then do remember that the OnePlus 5's design was inspired from the Oppo R11 to a greater extent. The primary reason for such inspiration is that OnePlus is a part of Oppo and the Dash charging technology was also taken from Oppo's VOOC charging technology hence the title combines the newly launched device i.e the R15/R15 DME and the upcoming OnePlus flagship.

The Oppo R15's rear design and precisely the camera module is quite similar to the R11 or the OnePlus 5T. The fingerprint sensor is not perfectly circular but rather elongated and the rear is completely made out of glass. The front houses a 6.28 inch OLED display with 19:9 aspect ratio and FHD+ resolution including the notorious notch to pave the way for minimum bezels. The 3.5mm headphone jack should get an honorable mention since it is present. Along with fingerprint sensor, face unlocking is also available.

The interesting part about the R15 is that it is powered by Mediatek's Helio P60 SOC. This SOC is based on 12nm process and consists of 4 Cortex A73 cores and 4 Cortex A53 cores each clocked at 2.0 GHz. The GPU used is Mali G72 - MP3 which is clocked at 800 MHz. The combination seems powerful however, optimisation matters ultimately which can only be figured out practically. The P60 SOC, from the specification competes with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 636 or equivalent SOCs. The R15 and R15 DME comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage with the option to increase the storage further upto 256GB via sdcard.

Speaking of cameras which Oppo has always been bragging about, the R15 comes with dual 16MP (f/1.7 aperture, 1.22 micron pixel size and Sony IMX519 sensor) and 5MP (f/2.2) lenses. The front facing camera which again is selfie centric comes with 20MP f/2.0 aperture lens. Being a 2018 device, Oppo has also included the AI functions which help with the portrait and studio lighting apart from the beauty mode.

The R15 DME comes with similar camera specifications barring the secondary rear camera which comes with a 20MP f/1.7 aperture lens. Another major difference is that the DME is powered by 14nm based Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SOC which is based on KRYO cores. The same SOC was also powering the Oppo R11. The battery capacity on the R15 is 3450mAh whereas the R15 DME gets a slightly lower capacity i.e 3400 mAh. Oppo's own VOOC charging technology is also present to charge the battery at a faster rate. Both these devices come with Android Oreo based on Oppo's own Color OS 5.1.

The specifications do not seem top notch (lol again) however the R11 also witnessed the same. The flagship SOC from Qualcomm was taken by OnePlus and with the leads considering the R15 and R15 DME, we can expect the next OnePlus i.e the OnePlus 6 to have similar design with the Snapdragon 845 SOC powering it. The R15 is priced at CNY 2999 (~Rs. 30,000) and the R15 DME is priced at CNY 3299 (~Rs. 33,000) in China.
The OnePlus 6 is expected to be more expensive than the predecessor which unfortunately has been the case since the OnePlus 2. Well, from here we can predict quite a few specifications of the OnePlus 6 although anything can happen at the end moment which might even include omitting the notch or addition of an on-screen fingerprint sensor albeit OnePlus decides to revamp the design completely.

If not then will you prefer the OnePlus 6 with a notch? Do share your thoughts in the comments, we are eager to know :-D
