Sony announces budget R1 and R1 Plus in India

Sony has come up with a budget series device in India known as the R1 and R1 Plus. They had recently announced the XZ1 and XA1 Plus with the R series filling the void in the budget segment. The R series devices have been announced only in India till now thereby making it market specific for target audience. Also after a long time Sony has priced their device in a proper manner by keeping it under Rs. 16000.

Sony R1 and R1 Plus specifications:
  • 5.2 inch 720p (1280×720) IPS LCD display and 2.5D curved glass
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SOC with 8 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.4gHz and Adreno 505 GPU
  • 2GB RAM - 16GB storage for R1 and 3GB RAM - 32GB storage for R1 Plus expandable upto 128GB via sdcard
  • 13MP rear camera with hybrid autofocus and Exmor Sony sensor and LED flash
  • 8MP front facing camera with hybrid autofocus
  • 2620 mAh battery
  • WiFi , Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, Glonass
  • USB type-C port and 3.5mm audio jack
  • It weighs 154g and has a thickness of 8.89mm
  • Android Nougat
  • Dual Nano SIM slot

The R1 and R1 Plus do not come with a fingerprint sensor. It still retains Sony's original design with huge bezels and it resembles any other Sony device launched earlier be it even a flagship. With these specs it competes with the LG Q6 and the Nokia 6. Both come with the similar SOC i.e Snapdragon 430/435 (the 435 is just a minor upgrade from the 430 with different modem).
Sony has also assured Android Oreo update soon and it comes with Android Nougat out of the box with Sony's own Ui. In this segment it is one of the first device to have a USB type-C port retaining the 3.5mm headphone jack since they are on the verge of being obsolete.

The R1 and R1 Plus will be available via Amazon India, Flipkart and Sony Stores. They have been priced at Rs. 12,990 (R1) and Rs. 14,990 (R1 Plus). The only difference between them is the storage and RAM where you pay Rs. 2000 extra for an extra 1GB RAM and double the storage. Is the device worth buying based on specs and other offerings?? Well unless you are a Sony Fanboy or have been eyeing to own a Sony phone only then it can be a decent choice otherwise the Huawei Honor 6X, Redmi Note 4, Moto G5 Plus are a better choice.
Both these devices will be available in Black and Silver color options and will go on sale starting  November 10th.
