Micromax Canvas Infinity - is it any good?

Micromax, one of the largest smartphone manufacturer in India has announced the Canvas Infinity with the same aspect ratio as that of the G6 i.e 18:9. The main highlighting factor is the affordability of owning an almost bezelless device. However, Micromax has been notorious to just rebrand any device from China and sell them in India under their brand name. Is the Canvas Infinity any rebranded device from China? Only time will tell.
Canvas Infinity

Specifications:
  • 5.7 inch 18:9 full vision display with 1440 × 720 pixels (720p or HD) and 2.5D curved glass
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SOC with 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.4gHz
  • Adreno 308 GPU
  • 3GB RAM and 32GB storage expandable upto 128GB via sdcard
  • 13MP f/2.0 rear camera with 81.5° field of view and 1.12 micron pixel size
  • 16MP front facing camera with 81.5° field of view
  • 2900mAh battery (No fast charging)
  • Wifi 802.11 b/g/n and 2.4gHz band support, Bluetooth 4.1 , GPS
  • Sensors: accelerometer, proximity, ambient light, fingerprint, magnetic sensor
  • Android Nougat with future update to Android Oreo
The Canvas Infinity resembles the G6 to some extent from the front. The 18:9 aspect ratio under Rs. 10000, makes it the first to have such a unique screen. The device has a metallic back which is removable and one can access the 2900mAh battery which is again removable. Probably a plus point for many as removable battery has become quite rare these days. Another rare feature is the capability to add 2 SIMs and an sdcard unlike hybrid SIM slot.

The SOC used here is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425. The 425 is also used on the Xiaomi Redmi 4A. The 4A is the ultra low budget offering from Xiaomi. The 425 is not capable to handle any heavy tasks like graphic intensive games and heavy multitasking. However, basic tasks like day to day usage must never be an issue.

Camera module with flash and fingerprint sensor

The rear camera is of 13MP and the front facing camera is of 16MP which is stressed by Micromax to be another selling point apart from the screen. It comes with Super Pixel feature which basically takes multiple shots, combines them and produces a final image with higher resolution and more detail. Some other features include portrait mode, real time bokeh and re-focus which enables you to focus any desired area after the image has been captured.

Speaking of practicality, is there any reason to buy this device? Probably you should decide!
The only selling point is the unique screen which is unfortunately just a 720p display. Another reason to get it is the separate slot for 2 SIMs and an SD card. The SOC used is mediocre which is available in devices under Rs. 7000 and the 2900mAh battery will only last a day. If you really want to try the 18:9 aspect ratio screen without being heavy on the wallet and also get a decent package, the LG Q6 is the way to go although the asking rate is Rs. 14,990 atleast it has a decent SOC i.e 435. The Canvas Infinity competes directly with the Nokia 3 and when placed side by side, the Canvas Infinity is better.
Under Rs. 10K, the other devices which outcasts the Canvas Infinity not only in performance but also in battery life are : Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4, Lenovo K6 power.

If you are still interested in this device then it will be available via Amazon India for Rs. 9999 on September 1st.
With Canvas Infinity, Micromax has promised service within 24Hrs and for more details related to terms and conditions do refer the link.
