LG announces the V30 with 18:9 display

The IFA 2017 has begun with full swing in Berlin and LG has unvelied the successor to the anticipated V series that is the V30. The V series is the second half flagship offering from LG which competes with the Samsung's Note series. They are mainly focused on Camera and particularly videography apart from being powerful. The V10 and 20 came with a secondary screen at the top of the main display which would display notifications along with some toggles but this time LG has ditched them off to make room for a nearly bezelless design with inspiration from the G6.
LG V30

LG V30 specifications:
  • 6 inch 18:9 (2880×1440) P-OLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection and HDR10
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SOC with 4 Kryo 280 cores clocked at 2.45gHz and 4 cores at 1.9gHz
  • Adreno 540 GPU
  • 4GB RAM and 64/128GB storage expandable via sdcard
  • Dual 16 (f/1.6 with 71° field of view) + 13 (f/1.9 and wide-angle 120° lens) rear cameras with LED flash
  • 5MP f/2.2 aperture 90° field of view front facing camera
  • 3300mAh battery with quick charge support and wireless charging capability
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac 2.4 and 5gHz band support
  • Bluetooth 5, USB type-C port
  • IP 68 dust and water resistant
  • Android Nougat based on LG UX 6 with Android O update soon
  • 7.39mm thick
The V30 comes with front and back glass body flanked by Gorilla Glass 5 protection and metallic frame to the sides. The camera lens has Gorilla Glass 4 protection. The device overall has the Military standard protection (MIL-STD-810G) which is also present on the G6. This will make the device resistant to some impacts however everything depends on fate ;-)

With the V30 LG has not only ditched the secondary display but also the Metallic body and removable back panel which housed the removable battery. Although it may be a bummer for many but the glass back has enabled wireless charging. The rear houses the 2 camera sensors, LED flash and the fingerprint sensor at the center and speaking of the headphone jack, yes! It does exist and the addition of 32 bit Quad DAC will ensure better sound output.

LG has focussed on Camera a lot and for the first time, a mobile device will have f/1.6 aperture lens. Till date, Samsung had the largest with f/1.7. The main lens of 16MP with f/1.6 aperture has 71° field of view and the wide angle lens of 13MP will have f/1.9 aperture with 120° field of view. OIS and autofocus is available only with the main lens and the wide angle lens has no stabilization and has only fixed focus. Like the LG V20 and G6 which came with tonnes of tweaks in the camera app, the V30 is no exception. There is a Pro mode available even for video recording and additional features of colour grading, cinematic mode, point zoom to get smooth zooming of any object and so on has been made available.
Overall the camera of V30 is something to look for and indeed a tough competitor to the recently launched Note 8.

On the software front, LG has its own custom UI which is not praised by many. Although it does come with many useful features like floating toggles which can be summoned with a touch, dropping the notification panel with a dedicated software button, enhanced gaming options including setting the quality and taking screenshots and various other game tools, etc. The always ON display is here too and this time the display being OLED, more options are available based on preference. Overall the UI is a personal choice.

The device will first go on sale in South Korea and the pricing details will be made available later. It will be available in different colours like Blue, Black, silver and the availability of features like Quad DAC will be region specific.

This device by LG in my opinion is the best till date and a worthy competitor to the Samsung's offering. The design, build quality, camera and specs all seem very promising however as I always say: the real world usage matters the most!

(This is not a review but just an overall overview of the device)
