Xiaomi has been doing really well with the Redmi series combined with their Note series. The Redmi 4 and the Note 4 became one of the most popular device in the budget category as it offered a lot as against it's competitors therby surpassing a million in terms of sold units. Now, the successor to the most interesting "series" gets a spec and design leak. (The leaks have emerged from Weibo)
The Redmi 5 is expected to come in 2 SOC and RAM variants. The Redmi 4 came with Snapdragon 435 SOC and 3 RAM variants i.e 2,3 and 4. Now, the Redmi 5 will come with Snapdragon 625 and 630 SOC.
The 630 is an upgraded version of 625 and comes with 8 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.2gHz (as against 2.0gHz on the 625) and Adreno 508 GPU. (The 625 comes with 506 GPU). Both the 625 and 630 are based on 14nm process.
The RAM and storage options include :

- 625 SOC and 3GB RAM with 16/32GB storage
- 630 SOC and 4GB RAM with 64GB storage
The device will come with 5 inch 1080p display as against 720p on the predecessor.
In terms of camera it will pack a 16MP rear camera and 5MP front facing camera. The Redmi 4 had 13MP and 5MP cameras.
The battery capacity will be 3680mAh which is quite lesser than the predecessor as it had 4000/4100 mAh battery. However, quick charge support will be present.
The device will run MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.1
The fingerprint sensor will be at the rear similar to any other Redmi device.
The expected pricing is as follows:
For Snapdragon 625 SOC:
After the Redmi 5, let's talk about Redmi Note 5. The Note 5 will be quite similar in design to the predecessor as it will have 5.5 inch 1080p IPS LCD display.
It will be available in 2 SOC variants i.e Snapdragon 630 and 660.
The Snapdragon 660 is based on KRYO 260 architecture and 14nm process.
The device will come with 16MP Sony IMX234 sensor and f/2.0 aperture lens with dual LED flash. The front facing camera will be of 13MP. The Note 4 on the other hand had 13MP rear facing camera with 5MP front camera.
It will sport 3790 mAh battery as against 4100/4000 mAh on its predecessors. The primary reason for this is the reduced thickness of 7.5mm. The Note 4 had thickness of 8.5mm which catered to more space for larger capacity.
Considering the thickness and battery capacity, Xiaomi might have done a great job to not compromise much. However, these are mere leaks and the final specs may vary.
One noticeable fact from the leak indicates that the fingerprint sensor has been shifted to the front instead of the traditional rear position. The front facing sensors were used only on Xiaomi's flagships till now.
The device as said earlier will come in 2 SOC variants and multiple storage and RAM variants.
Which variant will support which SOC is not known yet however, its expected that the 4GB - 64GB variant will boast the Snapdragon 660 SOC. The specs combined with price seems promising and going with the likes of its predecessors i.e Note 3 and 4, the Note 5 may still be a top contender in the budget category.
