MOTO G5 and G5 PLUS

Lenovo owned Motorola last year launched the G4 and G4 plus. Both these devices were quite successful in the Indian markets despite having flaws. Recently in the MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS in Barcelona, Moto unveiled the successor to the most successful running G series i.e the G5 and the G5 plus. Lets take a closer look at both these devices.

MOTO G5:

The Moto G5 has a 5 inch 1080p i.e (1080 x 1920) IPS LCD display having Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Although, its not the latest version of  Gorilla glass yet the Gorilla glass 3 has quite a good record in providing protection from scratches and accidental drops. Below the display is a Fingerprint scanner which is of capacitive type and not a button to be pressed. It does act as the home button too.
Towards the top we have the speaker, sensors and the front facing 5MP camera.

The back houses the Rear camera of 13MP with dual tone LED flash and the MOTO branding. It has a removable back panel and to maintain the juice, this device has a 2800mAh battery which should be able to last a full working day however all depends on  the optimization of applications to make use of battery in an efficient manner.
Speaking of the processor, the G5 is powered by the Snapdragon 430 chipset which has 8 cortex A-53 cores clocked at 1.4 gHz and has Adreno 505 as GPU. The device will be available in 2 RAM and storage variants i.e 2 GB - 16GB and 3GB- 32GB.

The rear camera is of 13MP having f/2.0 aperture with PHASE DETECTION AUTOFOCUS and it is capable of FHD or 1080p recording at 30 frames per second. Moto had done a great job in terms of camera with the G4 and the plus as the devices had one of the best camera performances even in low light in the budget segment and hence,  same is expected with the G5 and the plus variant.
The front facing camera is a 5MP shooter with f/2.2 aperture capable enough of capturing decent selfies.

The other specifications include Bluetooth v4.2 with GPS having support of A-GPS and GLONASS. The device has a micro-USB port and not a USB type-C port for charging and data transfer. Like the G4, this device too has support for fast charging i.e Moto's Turbo charge.

MOTO G5 PLUS:

Its a usual trend now for brands to release a PLUS version with the regular version and MOTO is no exception. The G5 plus is expected to be again one of the best budget phones as it packs really great camera sensors along with one of the most efficient processor, however all depends on the pricing if they do it right.

The device has a 5.2 inch IPS LCD display with 1080x1920 resolution i.e FHD. The pixels per inch comes to around 424. The device has the Fingerprint sensor at the bottom which is again of capacitive type like the G5. The top part has the speaker, sensors with the front facing camera.

The back of the device has the Rear camera with the dual tone LED flash and the MOTO branding at the center. Unlike the G5, the G5 plus has a non-removable back cover and to keep up the juice it has a 3000mAh battery which again like the G5 must last for a full working day.

The device is powered by the QUALCOMM SNAPDRAGON 625 processor which has 8 cortex
A-53 cores  clocked at 2.0 gHz and has Adreno 506 GPU. This chipset is based on the 14nm architecture which makes it highly power efficient. The device will be available in 2,3,4 GB RAM variants having 32GB internal storage for the 2 and 3 GB variants and 64GB for the 4GB variant.

Speaking of the camera which is the main focus point of this device, it has a 12MP rear camera with f/1.7 aperture. Although the G5 has higher mexapixels, yet number always does not matter. The G5 plus will have better low light shots mainly because of the higher aperture size i.e f/1.7 The decision of going with the 12MP sensor makes more sense as compressing more pixels will tend to reduce low light performance when smartphone sensors are concerned. This is one of the reasons for Samsung's S7 and edge to have one of the best camera performance.
The front facing camera is of 5MP with f/2.2 aperture which is similar to the G5.

The remaining specs include Bluetooth v4.2 , support for micro-USB port for charging and data transfer , fast charging ( Turbo charging).

Both these devices will be running ANDROID NOUGAT (7.0) out of the box with MOTO's usual almost stock android ROM.
The devices will be available for sale in India via flipkart on March 15th. Last year the G4 plus and the G4 were priced under Rs. 15000 and hence similar pricing is expected. Although MOTO had priced its MOTO M at 16000 which is a very low powered device with average camera hence nothing can be said about the pricing right now. There is a vast difference in the internals of the G5 and the plus where the main focus is on the G5 plus and especially its camera. The G5 plus directly competes with the HONOR 6X , COOL 1 and the XIAOMI REDMI NOTE 4 and it would be interesting to see whether how does it compete with them.
