We all know that Oppo and Vivo are sister companies placed under BBK electronics. Of course there has to be similarities that come into picture which is certain from their marketing strategies focussed on the selfie crowd. Ultimately even their innovative stuff have many things in common yet one is refined whereas the other provided a breakthrough. Here we are speaking of the Vivo Nex or rather the APEX which was showcased way back during the MWC that provided a breakthrough and the Oppo Find X is a refinement of the above breakthrough. This should be evident if we compare them side by side.
The Oppo Find X like the Vivo NEX has the front facing camera that pops up. Wait! its not over yet but rather Oppo took the tech alternative to reduce the bezels and eliminate the notch further which made the rear facing unit along with the sensors also pop up. Hence, here we have the entire unit that will pop up whenever required. To keep up with the trend, Oppo has also included facial recognition which might ring a bell as to how can the device recognize the face when the unit is at rest. Well ! whenever you pick up the phone, the unit pops up for few seconds until it recognizes the face and it goes back to its initial rest position - The tech seems impressive yet we don't know as to how will it fare in a year or two if you intend to use this method since no one can guarantee the proper functioning of any mechanical component in the long run. Whatever it is, we are impressed since this solution does add up to the innovation that was expected from big brands like Apple or even Samsung. The irony is that the next Pixel XL will host a notch - Spoiler alert !! Its indeed a big notch.
Coming back to the Find X, it is a complete flagship with specs such as a 6.42 inch 19.5:9 AMOLED display (93.8 Screen Ratio) with curve towards both the sides, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and Adreno 630 GPU along with 8GB of RAM and 128/256 GB storage. The cameras housed in the slider consist of dual 16+20 MP (RGB+Depth) f/2.0 with AI for scene detection and the front facing camera is of 25MP f/2.0 that comes with AI features for revolutionary emojis and Oppo named it as 3D Omoji (Oppo + Emoji = Omoji !!). The device is powered by a 3730 mAh battery with VOOC charging technology which has basically the same ratings as the DASH charger. Overall the device is made up of metal and glass with the latter being dominant providing a seamless design. The device inspite of being thick misses out on the headphone jack :-!
Speaking of the main highlight i.e the slider or rather the pop-up mechanism, apart from the camera, it consists of the face unlocking system. It comes with a dot projector that projects 15000 dots or rather gathers information from 15000 points on the face for better accuracy and named it as O-Face ( :O ). Oppo does claim it to be highly accurate however the slider takes about 0.5s to pop up which makes it slower than a conventional fingerprint sensor that the Find X is devoid off - Yes!! There is no fingerprint sensor on this phone which makes it slightly lesser interesting than the Vivo NEX - S that comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Infrared sensor is also present for low light face unlocking. The top towards the front houses a small speaker for calls that seems flushed with the design. Having a real speaker instead of making use of the vibrations makes sense since the call quality should never be compromised.
Now coming to the title, why did we call it a refined NEX. Well, here we are talking in terms of the slider which in the case of the NEX is just the front facing camera that seems like a forced design element that was never meant to be whereas in this case, the slider seems to be elegant and it houses a lot of components. This design language makes it more refined yet the on-screen fingerprint sensor coupled in the 'NEX - A' makes it a better innovative flagship overall considering our perspective. We are not claiming it to be one of the best since without having the device in-hand we cannot provide our opinions yet from the first look itself and on comparing the tech, it is safe to assume from the physical perspective that Find X seems to be a more finished product although from the software front we cannot claim. Speaking of software the Find X comes with Color OS 5.1 based on Android 8.1 which is Oppo's own custom OS that may not be pleasing to all.
Now for the moment of truth i.e the pricing. We all know that Oppo has always resorted to pricing its products higher and same is the case here with the 256GB variant priced at €999. There is also a special edition Lamborghini variant that comes with 512 GB storage, 3400 mAh battery capacity and super VOOC charging technology which will retail for €1700.
If given a choice, what would you choose - a device with an in-display fingerprint sensor and a notch or rather a notchless slider phone with a physical fingerprint sensor ? Do let us know.
